If you don’t mind a bit of chilly weather, I think Prague is a perfect city to visit in winter. Well, Prague is for me perfect in all seasons (confession of Prague lover) but there are few advantages of visiting Prague in the wintertime. Except for advent weekends and New Years Eve period, it is a tourists low season. That means much fewer people in the streets and very affordable prices for hotels! I mean, 4* hotel in the centre for 40 – 50 Eur per night (talking about January & February rates)? Just check your favourite booking engines and see for yourself. CHRISTMAS MARKETS

If coming to Prague in December, you simply can’t miss the visit of Christmas markets. Weekends are bit crowdy, but if you have a chance, stop at the markets during the working days. The atmosphere is much more peaceful. I put together the list of Christmas Markets in Prague, you can read it right here.

ICE SKATING

Felling bit staffed from all those sweets (like the trdelník) and cups of mulled time? Ice skating might be a good sporty and fun activity for you 🙂 Right in the city centre, you can find ice rink called “Na Františku” (address Kozí 847/25). This rink is open every day from the end of November until half of March and you can borrow the skates there. Entrance is for 50 CZK and borrowing skates for 50 CZK as well ( + you have to pay 500 CZK refundable deposit).

CAFES

Enough with the outdoor activities and let’s move inside 🙂 If you are a fan of coffee and amazing interiors, Prague has a lot to offer! If you would ask me what is my favourite cafe, I couldn’t get you a straight answer. As a kind of lazy person, I usually visit just cafes in my neighbourhood. I can recommend you Vnitroblock (industrial interior & design shop), Barry Higgel’s Coffehouse (cosy little cafe) and Alza Cafe (inside of a huge shop with electronics).  I really like the coffee guide from this web.

OPERA & CONCERTS

This is something I want to try every year and it never works out. Fingers crossed for this year 🙂 I like classical music but I never went to a such a concert. Here is the list of events. What would you pick? I would love to attend some concert of Czech Philharmonic.

CINEMA

Are you going to the cinema when travelling? I think it is a great idea what to do when travelling in the winter time. Outside is cold and dark really soon. Leave out the multi-cinema complexes which you can visit everywhere and try the classic cinema with the soul instead. My favourite ones in Prague are Lucerna & Bio Oko (click to see programmes in English).

MUSEUMS & GALLERIES

If you are craving bit of culture, visiting museums and galleries is another obvious indoor activity. And due to winter weather, you don’t have to feel guilty about missing beautiful day outside 🙂 Besides cultural and historical museums you can find in Prague unusual museums like The Museum of Communism in the Czech Republic or Sex Machines Museum. BEER & PUBS

The Czech Republic is famous for the beer. There are so many nice pubs where you can try different types of beer. You can even take a tour of a local brewery! To recommend you some of the pubs: there is a really nice chain of pubs, it is called Lokál and you can find it in several spots in Prague, here is a list. Besides beer, they offer also typical Czech dishes. If you would like to try international beers, you can try Beer Geek or T-Anker (which is on the rooftop with an amazing view of Prague, I even included this place to my list of favourite views in Prague, you can read it here).

NEW YEAR’S FIREWORKS

If you are visiting Prague in New Years Eve period, note that official fireworks are not at midnight as in other cities but the day after – on 1.1. at 18:00. For a good view of fireworks is recommend to stay in the city centre by the riverside or on the bridges under the Letná Hill. 

TRIP TO ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

If you get tired of Prague (like that is even possible) – ok, if you feel like you have done and seen everything in Prague what you wanted, you can consider taking a day trip to another beautiful Czech town like from fairytale. I am talking about Český Krumlov. Which is the perfect place for a winter trip, here you can read my post all about it.
